How to Use Aeon

Learn how to request rare materials.

Aeon is the Huntington Library's online request management system. Researchers use the system to place requests for rare materials, while staff uses the system to manage circulation to the Ahmanson Reading Room. An Aeon account allows you to:

  • Request rare materials in advance of your reading room visit.
  • Submit Imaging Services requests for digital reproductions.
  • Track the status of requests for the reading room and Imaging Services requests.

Create an Aeon account online to begin placing requests. If you're unsure if you already have an Aeon account, please contact us.

Visit our FAQs page for answers to frequently asked questions about Aeon. If you need further assistance, please contact the library.

N.B. Aeon is not a catalog or discovery tool; it is the system you use to register with the library and reqeust rare materials. To learn about search tools, visit our Library Resources guide.

Request Limit

To ensure your requests are available in a timely manner, please submit your requests at least 72 hours in advance of your first visit. You may request up to five items per appointment. We recommend using the Save Request for Later feature to create a list of requests for future appointments.

Rare materials are paged twice a day: 8:30 am and 1:00 pm. Requests submitted after these times will be retrieved the following day.

Space permitting, materials may be held for up to two weeks.

Collections or archives are occasionally restricted at the donor's request or due to copyright. These collections may also require curatorial approval and extended delivery time.

All requests for restricted materials may be placed by following the steps for requesting through the library catalog.
