Using the Library

Information for Readers and Fellows.

Thank you for your interest in the Huntington Library. We are an independent research center for the humanities that welcomes researchers from all over the world. The Reader Services Department, located within the library in the Munger Research Center, is happy to assist you with your research.

We look forward to welcoming you to the library!

COVID-19: Requirements for Visitors

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is requiring mask usage in indoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status. To comply with Los Angeles County ordinances, all visitors and staff must wear masks in The Huntington's interior spaces beginning Monday, July 19, 2021. Reader Services will provide disposable masks if yours is forgotten.

Reader Vaccination Policy

As the highly transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant continues to spread across the country and the related hospitalization of unvaccinated individuals rises, The Huntington is requiring all researchers to be fully vaccinated (two weeks have passed since their final dose) by the date of their appointment, effective September 7, 2021.

By requesting an appointment for the Ahmanson Reading Room, you agree to follow the institution's vaccination policy and comply with the following requirements:

You attest to being fully vaccinated and understand that you must present proof of vaccination for entry.

Each time you arrive for an appointment, be sure to bring:

  • Proof of your appointment AND
  • Current reader card (if already issued) AND
  • CDC Vaccination Card (original) or other original certificate issued by a governmental health service OR
  • Digital COVID-19 vaccine record with QR code OR
  • Digital image of the front of your original vaccine card that includes your full name, vaccine product name, and dates administered

Vaccinated researchers must continue to follow health and safety guidelines, including wearing a mask over your nose and mouth, and washing your hands often.

Currently, we are unable to accept proof of a negative test or grant exemptions. We will update researchers when there are changes to institutional policy and library capacity.

As stated above, vaccine verification will be checked at the door each time you arrive for an appointment.

When making an appointment or contacting reference, do not upload any images of your vaccination record. Please do not share any medical information when communicating with Huntington staff.

Preparing for Your Library Visit

The library's Ahmanson Reading Room is open to researchers who wish to consult rare materials, including both first-time applicants and renewing readers. Before visiting the library, please be sure to have identified the materials you wish to see; start by searching the library catalog, or contact the library for help finding materials related to your research.

Please use this checklist to prepare for your library visit:

  1. Create an account in Aeon, the library's online registration and request management system. If you are unsure if you already have an Aeon account with the Huntington, please contact us.
  2. Submit an appointment request form. Requests must be submitted at least five business days in advance of when you'd like to visit. Please note that not all requests can be accommodated. Reader Services staff will confirm your Ahmanson Reading Room appointment, which will include a 15-minute library orientation at the beginning of your first visit. Only researchers with confirmed appointments will be admitted to the library.
  3. Request materials through Aeon at least 72 hours in advance of your visit. Step-by-step instructions for requesting materials through Aeon are available in the how-to guide.
  4. Review the reading room policies and rules of conduct outlined in this research guide.
  5. Familiarize yourself with the Huntington's COVID-19 protocols for visitors.

Please contact the library with questions about appointments.

When You Arrive

Access to the library is free; you do not need to pay admission to the Huntington grounds or become a member to visit. Parking is free. Rideshare commuters will find a designated drop-off zone near the Admissions courtyard, and there is a bicycle rack in the parking lot.

Proceed to the Munger Research Center, which is where the Reader Services office is located. See the map of the grounds for directions to the Munger.

Check-in at the reception desk in the Munger lobby. Security staff will ask you to present an appointment confirmation and a photo ID.

Please store bags and personal items in the locker room outside the Reader Services office after checking in. Feel free to borrow a clear plastic bag (available in the locker room) if you need assistance carrying your belongings.

At the beginning of your first visit to the library, you'll meet with a Reader Services staff member in the Reader Services office to pick up your library card. We'll also ask you to sign a library policy document.
